CASPCOM session held in St. Petersburg on 4-5 September 2025

On 4–5 September 2025, St. Petersburg hosted the 9(29)th session of the Coordinating Committee on Hydrometeorology of the Caspian Sea (CASPCOM), bringing together representatives of the five littoral states. The meeting focused on strengthening regional cooperation in environmental monitoring and addressing the challenges facing the Caspian Sea.

Discussions highlighted the long-standing collaboration between CASPCOM and the Tehran Convention, which began in the mid-2000s with joint projects on water quality monitoring and pollution assessments. These initiatives laid the foundation for the Environmental Monitoring Programme (EMP) for the Caspian Sea, designed to provide comprehensive data on pollution, hydrometeorological conditions, climate, and hydrology.

The session addressed the pressing issue of climate change, including fluctuations in Caspian Sea levels. Delegates underlined the importance of aligning monitoring programmes and utilizing CASPCOM’s extensive hydrometeorological data to strengthen assessments and support sustainable management of the sea’s environment.
