Launch of the Call for Abstracts: Scientific Conference “Changes in the Caspian Sea level: causes, modeling, adaptation strategies”
The Scientific Conference “Changes in the Caspian Sea level: causes, modeling, adaptation strategies” will be held in the course of May 2026 in hybrid format. The Conference is organized under the auspices of the Coordinating Committee on Hydrometeorology of the Caspian Sea (CASPCOM) and the Secretariat of the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea (Tehran Convention).

The Caspian Sea, the world's largest inland body of water, is a subject to significant and hardly predictable interannual fluctuations in its water levels. These changes, driven by complex interactions of climatic, hydrological, and geological factors, profoundly affect the region's ecosystems, socio-economic activities, and coastal communities. As the impacts of global climate change intensify, understanding the causes and addressing the consequences of these fluctuations has become an urgent scientific and policy priority. A comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach is needed to assess historical patterns, refine predictive models, evaluate the effects on marine systems and biodiversity, and develop strategies to mitigate and adapt to these changes.
This conference aims to bring together leading experts, researchers, and relevant policymakers to foster knowledge exchange, propose innovative solutions, and build resilience for the Caspian region. The Conference outcomes are anticipated to support the Caspian Governments, as well as Caspian and global stakeholders to take informed decisions in addressing Caspian Sea level fluctuations.
The Conference will be organized around 4 thematic focus areas:
1) Fluctuations in the Caspian Sea level: paleogeographic and climatic studies;
2) Modeling of the Caspian Sea level: problems and solutions;
3) The effect of water level fluctuations on the Caspian ecosystem and coastal socio-economic development;
4) Adaptation strategies to the Caspian Sea level fluctuations.
Participants are requested to prepare concise and informative abstracts focusing on the Conference objectives and introduce the methodology and results of their work. Based on the abstract, the Organizing Committee will decide on the acceptance to the Conference. The Organizing Committee consists of representatives of five Caspian countries nominated by the Ministries responsible for environmental protection, and the representatives of the Tehran Convention Secretariat and CASPCOM.
Short papers (extended abstracts) will be published in the Conference Proceedings, which will be listed in the Russian Science Citation Index and assigned with an ISBN.
