"Meet the Caspian Sea" side-event will be held within the UNFCCC COP29 on 19 November 2024
"Meet the Caspian Sea: Enhancing Coastal Resilience and Biodiversity Protection through the Tehran Convention under Climate Change impacts" side event aims to underscore the essential role of the Tehran Convention in addressing these transboundary environmental challenges, building climate resilience, and promoting sustainable development across the Caspian region.
As the world’s largest inland body of water, the Caspian Sea is vital to regional biodiversity, climate regulation, and economic sectors such as fishing, transport, and energy. However, it faces growing threats from climate change, pollution, and unsustainable resource use. In response, the Tehran Convention — the first legally binding regional agreement to protect the Caspian environment — provides a crucial platform for cooperation among Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan.
Objectives of the Event:
- Raise Awareness: Inform the international community about the Caspian Sea’s exceptional environmental challenges in the face of climate change and sustainable development needs.
- Showcase the Tehran Convention’s Role: Highlight the Convention’s progress in fostering regional cooperation, including pollution control, biodiversity conservation, and climate adaptation efforts.
- Strengthen Collaboration and Facilitate Dialogue: Explore synergies between the Tehran Convention and global climate initiatives under the UNFCCC, SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and the Global Biodiversity Framework.
Target Audience:
- Government representatives from Caspian littoral states
- International environmental organizations and UN agencies
- Policymakers, researchers, and civil society organizations
- Private sector stakeholders in marine and coastal management
This event presents a valuable opportunity to enhance dialogue and cooperation, as stakeholders come together to support the resilience and biodiversity of the Caspian Sea region in the face of climate change.
