Third Technical Meeting of Experts under the Environment Monitoring Programme of Tehran Convention was held on April 12, 2022

On April 12, 2022 the Third virtual technical meeting under the Caspian Environment Monitoring Programme (EMP) was held to bring together experts from all the Caspian littoral states for the purpose of discussing  obligatory and optional parameters of marine environment to be observed under EMP and littoral states' capacity in observing the marine environment parameters of the Caspian Sea.

The main purpose of the meeting is to obtain advice and guidance on environmental monitoring and assessment. The Caspian EMP was developed in 2010-2011 and welcomed by the Conference of the Parties in 2012 (COP4) “as the basis for continuation of this activity and capacity building and regional cooperation for monitoring the parameters which determine the quality of the marine environment of the Caspian Sea”. The draft Protocol on Monitoring, Assessment and Information Exchange which is under negotiations stipulates the implementation of the EMP as the basic framework for monitoring and information management. The first such meeting took place on March 5, 2021 in an on-line (virtual) format. The previous technical meeting was held in October 2021

The Meeting participants agreed to rely on the categories of substances listed in the Protocol for the Protection of the Caspian Sea against Pollution from Land-based Sources and Activities ("Moscow Protocol") to the Tehran Convention in the process of further discussions on the parameters of the marine environment to be monitored. The next technical meeting under the Caspian Environment Monitoring Programme will be held soon.
